Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the defining public health crisis of our age, threatening to rewind the clock and set us back years in our fight against infectious diseases. There are a variety of factors that contribute to the rise of resistance, but the main drivers are the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in humans and animals, along with inadequate investment in research and innovation to tackle AMR. The increased rate of resistant infections complicates routine medical procedures and compromises the effectiveness of life-saving interventions. As recommended by the WHO, urgent action is needed to combat AMR, with a focus on investment in innovations and research for new vaccines, diagnostics, and medications.
